FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification 22000) consists of three main components:
ISO 22000: The core of FSSC 22000 is based on the requirements of ISO 22000, which is the international standard specifying the requirements for a food safety management system. ISO 22000 provides a framework for organizations to implement a food safety management system that ensures food safety throughout the food chain.
ISO/TS 22002-1: FSSC 22000 incorporates ISO/TS 22002-1, which specifies the requirements for prerequisite programs (PRPs) specific to food manufacturing. PRPs are essential programs and activities that help control food safety hazards and maintain a hygienic environment in food production facilities.
Additional Requirements: FSSC 22000 includes additional requirements specific to the food sector, which are outlined in the Food Safety System Certification Scheme. These additional requirements address aspects such as food defense, food fraud prevention, and management of allergens, among others. These requirements enhance the food safety management system to better address the unique challenges and risks faced by organizations in the food industry.
Together, these three components form the comprehensive framework of FSSC 22000, providing a robust food safety management system that is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and accepted by many retailers and food manufacturers worldwide.
