The relationship between ISO 22000 and other standards

ISO 22000 is a food safety management system standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It outlines the requirements for an organization to establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve a food safety management system (FSMS). Understanding its relationship with other standards can provide insights into how different management systems can work together within an organization.


ISO 9001 (Quality Management):

ISO 9001 focuses on quality management systems (QMS) and provides a framework for organizations to ensure they meet customer and regulatory requirements. ISO 22000 can complement ISO 9001 by addressing specific food safety concerns within the quality management context. Many organizations integrate ISO 22000 with ISO 9001 to create an integrated management system that covers both quality and food safety.


ISO 14001 (Environmental Management):

ISO 14001 focuses on environmental management systems (EMS) and helps organizations manage their environmental responsibilities. While ISO 22000 primarily deals with food safety, organizations involved in food production often find it beneficial to integrate ISO 14001. This integration allows for a more holistic approach to managing environmental impacts associated with food production processes.


ISO/IEC 17025 (Laboratory Competence):

ISO/IEC 17025 specifies the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Laboratories involved in food testing and analysis can seek accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 alongside implementing ISO 22000. This combination ensures that laboratory processes adhere to internationally recognized standards for both competence and food safety.


HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points):

HACCP is a systematic preventive approach to food safety that identifies, evaluates, and controls hazards in food production processes. ISO 22000 certification incorporates HACCP principles and expands upon them by providing a broader framework for managing food safety across the entire supply chain. Many organizations that implement ISO 22000 use HACCP as a foundational tool within their food safety management system.


GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative):

GFSI benchmarks various food safety standards, including ISO 22000, against recognized food safety requirements. ISO 22000 is recognized by GFSI and can be used as a basis for achieving GFSI certification. This recognition facilitates international trade by providing a common framework for ensuring food safety throughout the supply chain.


In summary, ISO 22000 can be integrated with other standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO/IEC 17025, HACCP, and GFSI to create a comprehensive and integrated management system that addresses quality, environmental, laboratory competence, and food safety requirements within food-related organizations. This integration helps organizations streamline their management systems, improve operational efficiencies, and enhance overall performance and compliance in the food industry.
