ISO 22000 vs FSSC 22000

ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 are both standards related to food safety management systems, but they have some differences in their structure and requirements.

ISO 22000:

1.      Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

2.      It provides a framework for any organization in the food chain to implement a food safety management system.

3.      ISO 22000 is a generic standard applicable to all organizations in the food chain, including producers, processors, transporters, and retailers.

4.      It is based on the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and incorporates Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and other relevant guidelines.

5.      ISO 22000 certification demonstrates that an organization has implemented a comprehensive food safety management system.

FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification 22000):

1.      Developed by the Foundation for Food Safety Certification (FSSC), which is a non-profit organization.

2.      FSSC 22000 is based on ISO 22000 but includes additional requirements specific to the food sector.

3.      It incorporates ISO 22000, ISO/TS 22002-1 (Prerequisite Programs on Food Safety), and specific requirements of the Food Safety System Certification Scheme.

4.      FSSC 22000 is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), which means that certification to this standard is accepted by many retailers and food manufacturers globally.

5.      FSSC 22000 is often preferred by organizations in the food industry seeking certification, especially if they want to demonstrate compliance with GFSI benchmarked standards.

6.      In summary, while both ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 are related to food safety management systems and share similarities, FSSC 22000 includes additional requirements specific to the food sector and is recognized by GFSI, making it a preferred choice for many organizations in the food industry.
